Sports Massage

What is sports massage & how can it benefit you?

What is a sports massage?

Here at Stimulis Osteopathy (Truro, Cornwall) I do not just provide Osteopathy I also provide sports massage. I qualified in sports massage 12 years ago at the renown Scottish Massage Schools whilst being in the Armed Forces. This gave me a foundation of practical and theoretical in the field of physical therapy. Sports massage allows for the manipulation of soft tissues (skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments & fascia) to help individuals that are physically active. From runners, weight lifters, cross fitters to surfers, rugby players and footballers. In sports massage a number of techniques can be used to optimise the benefits you gain from the treatment; effleurage, kneading, hacking, wringing, trigger pointing, fascial and soft tissue release. All these contribute towards manipulating the soft tissues and increasing the potential benefits from the treatment.

The theory is that sports massage may provide the following benefits:

- Increased flexibility (tissue lengthening)

- Increased mobility (joint movement)

- Increased blood flow (to enhance nutrient delivery & reduce certain metabolites)

- Decreases the perception of discomfort / pain

- Decreases muscle tension and reduces knots

- May help reduce musculoskeletal injuries

- Emotionally makes you feel better and can help reduce stress, anxiety & general mood.

- Enhances sleep

- Ultimately sports massage here at Stimulis Osteopathy (Truro, Cornwall) contributes to overall recovery from being physically active.
